And so to write…… an ever spreading tapestry

I often wake up in the middle of the night and fathom out where the next pieces of the narrative might fit or in which direction my storyline is going. I have come to recognise this as part of the ongoing process.

There really is such a thing as ‘writer’s block’, but it eventually passes and during that period I usually go and do something quite different for a while, until my brain sorts out the language and presents me with another paragraph.

I try to write something each day as I believe in practise and rigour and know it works.

I call the unwieldy mass of words, ‘knitting.’ At the end of something I patch, by adding another strand of colour or a tone of lighter or darker, ‘material’.

As I collected the pieces of my first novel together, ‘Shapes in a Landscape’, I was overwhelmed by the unwieldy nature of the thing, so much so that I wondered if it would hold together as one unit.

As a consequence of such a troubling thought I created this, ‘fabric vocabulary’. Patch, knit, quilt, sew, weave, stitch and cut. I find it works for me. The visual in writing attracts me so this method of creating nuance and flow was an obvious tool to use.

We all have techniques that we feel comfortable with and come to trust. I wonder what yours are?
