I have the merest germ of an idea for a long, short story!
When this happens it makes me feel optimistic and I know when the sense takes me I will write snippets down and eventually put pen to paper. It's kind of liberating as the ideas free flow on their own somewhere in my head. Probably sounds crazy!
To my novel, Sweet earth.
John, I disagree with your premise that writing needs to be the way the reader expects it to be. That is totally wrong in my book.
The reader knows nothing of what is on the first page or the next, or the next how can he have expectations?
You as the writer must draw the reader into your story in a way that he doesn't even know he is being drawn, that is when the reader say those perfect words; "I COULDN'T PUT THAT BOOK DOWN."
The question is : HOW DO YOU DO THAT?
I try to end each chapter with questions to be answered fort one and every ten pages i have some sort of action going on that is pertinent to the story.
I have 13 books, 10 published www.erniesr.com a movie project and a TV project from my books. www.thepreyers.com
I hope this help you out.

Agree strongly with Ernie Lijoi sr. The reader, your audience likes to be surprised and interested so the pages turn. The unexpected may not always be comfortable, often hilarious and essentially captivating if structured well and with imagination.
I have something to say. When you write and want it published and sold, it's a product. If you write for your own pleasure it's different, though.
For any product to survive in the market consumers acceptance is very important. If you have a product that the buyer does not like it will be a failure. For an author to make an impression, have to have an authentic and distinct voice and he/she must be knowledgeable about who and what they are writing.
