The commonly accepted biography of Christopher Columbus, world-famous explorer, was full of intriguing gaps, doubts and numerous incoherent affirmations, some of which even contradicted coeval documents. Accepted wisdom presented Columbus as a poor Genoese commoner who arrived in Portugal at 25 years of age, but who could not write in his supposed native tongue of Genoese. Yet the discoverer could read and write fluently in Portuguese and Castilian. His 1479 marriage to Filipa Moniz integrated the future discoverer into the inner circle of the Portuguese court, only 2 years after supposedly arriving penniless in Portugal and 14 years before the outside world heard of him.

To understand what the truth may be, I had to become an open-minded hunter of information and a chaser of blurred evidence, long-ago censured and sanitized. I have dedicated half a lifetime to scrutinizing original documents, chronicles, and letters in many archives, over the last 26 years and distilled all that information into a new concept of who Columbus was and what he was truly doing by offering the sea route to India to Spain, Portugal’s only enemy in Europe. The result of my research has been published in several books over the last 10 years.

I have advised UNESCO and the Haitian Government on matters related to Columbus’ lost flagship: the Santa Maria. I have also participated in DNA studies of Columbus and have been featured in several TV documentaries.
