Merle Temple's novel, A Ghostly Shade of Pale, Stirs Interest in Hollywood

Tupelo, Mississippi, native Merle Temple has written his first novel, A Ghostly Shade of Pale. It has garnered warm reviews from readers and Southern Writer's Magazine calls it "suspense-driven and you will not want to put it down..., his personal experiences make it a compelling read from cover to cover..., memories have their way with him so those raw emotions would surface and be laid bare on page after page of remembrances, in order for his readers to feel what he felt."

Criminal Minds' Jim Clemente says "Ghostly is a crime story as literature. Merle Temple is a great storyteller, writing to all of your senses. He weaves a story so detailed and complex, yet beautifully sinister, that the reader is immersed in the feeling of absolute reality."

Producers are looking at Merle's novel for a possible movie or TV series, and Merle signed books for the casts of Criminal Minds and Major Crimes while in Hollywood to meet with producers. He also appeared on Media Mayhem in Beverly Hills. Host Allison Hope Weiner said, "Captures the South, the period in the 1960s...evocative of some of the great Southern writers...a taste and feeling for where you are...intriguing, a lot of layers in this fascinating book..."

Signings from Tupelo's Gum Tree Bookstore to LifeWay in Hollywood, and Barnes and Noble in Las Vegas to Marlowe's in Memphis have been greeted with long lines of book lovers. The crime-mystery thriller is written as fiction but based on Merle's experiences as a narcotics agent in the first declared "War on Drugs" in the early 1970s.

History files on a bygone era are ripped open and rewritten in games of murder, betrayal, the macabre, and the supernatural in A Ghostly Shade of Pale.

Michael Parker comes of age as the tranquility of the old South is shattered in the 1970s by civil unrest, the Vietnam War, and a wave of drug abuse that brings the war on drugs to his front door. Fresh out of Ole Miss, he joins the newly formed Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and enters a world he is not prepared for. A chain of events unfolds that lead him to become an unlikely player in a game of international intrigue and a clandestine struggle for the soul of America.

The remote crop-duster airfields of Mississippi become launching pads for soldiers of fortune hired by intelligence agencies to smuggle guns into Central America. They return with drugs to fund black operations and shape what their employers call the "Real America." These intelligence rogues employ Fredrick, a murderous psychopath, to manipulate protests against the war and as a contract assassin who has no remorse. They realize too late that his loyalties are not to them or to the communists he also manipulates as a double agent but to the voices in his head that speak to him incessantly.

An uneasy and complex alliance between these shadowy figures, organized crime bosses, and corrupt politicians form a matrix where Fredrick indulges his madness, slimy Mississippi politicians nurture their deviancy, and snipers ambush Michael and his agents on frozen fields of regret. A deadly game of cat and mouse threatens the life of the woman Michael loses and finds again as she washes down black beauties with champagne in the seamy Memphis nightclubs of the Dixie Mafia.

As he searches for an elusive peace and tries to resist the charms of his troubled lover, the Dixie Mafia tries to kill him, mob lawyers try to bribe him, and the Bureau of Narcotics is infiltrated and compromised. Parker, a modern paladin in search of just causes and dragons to slay, is a cop-philosopher commenting on the world in which he travels as he awakens at twenty-six to find that the whole of his life-his notion of right and wrong and good and evil-was all a lie.

The plan to alter America filters down to and corrupts government at all levels and claims the lives of those who could never know or imagine the origin of their demise. It all comes unraveled in the madness of Fredrick and the conflicted state police agent who unwittingly becomes the fly in the ointment to machinations he cannot begin to grasp until he is forced to fight for his life and the lives of those he loves against enemies seen and unseen.

A Ghostly Shade of Pale, the first in a trilogy, is available in hardback and eBook (Nook, Kindle, and iTunes) at Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble at bn.com, Gum Tree Bookstore in Tupelo, MS., Square Books in Oxford, MS., TurnRow Books in Greenwood, MS., Lemuria Bookstore in Jackson, MS., Barnes and Noble in Tupelo, MS and Henderson, Nevada, and LifeWay Books in Tupelo, MS. and Brea, CA.

Facebook Tricks for Published Writers

Facebook as we all know it is a massive trafficking tool for internet users. In today's lesson, I will show you all the tricks that Facebook has to offer to published writers.

I will show you the six most important procedures of setting up your facebook's marketing platform, and the first step is 'Setting up your Fan-Page.' If you already have a Fan Page, skip to step 11 below to learn how to optimize the Fan page for better results.

"Setting up your Fan Page"

1. Log-in to Facebook.com

2. Visit this link to set-up a page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?campaign_id=372931622610&a...

3. Choose the “Artist, Band, or Public Figure” tile—it’s in the lower-left corner

4. Select either “author” or “writer” from the drop-down menu and enter your name (see note below)

NOTE:  Other Facebook Pages that may appeal to writers include:  “book,” “book store,” “fictional character,” “library,” or “magazine” under the “Entertainment” category (the lower middle tile), and “media, news, and publishing” under the “Company, Organization, or Institution” category (upper middle tile)

5. Check the box to agree to Facebook’s Pages Terms

6. You will be greeted by the “Get Started” page, just to the right of this text, there will be a like button, click it.

7. You’ll see a numbered list of steps. Step 1: Upload a picture. People are more likely to trust a page with a picture, I think (even if it’s merely a book cover or an avatar)

8. Steps 2 and 3—invite your friends and import your contacts. When you click to invite your friends a screen will pop up with all of your existing Facebook contacts, you can search for particular friends that you think may be interested, filter your friends by the lists you’ve set up, or just go through everybody and click who you want to invite. To import your contacts, you’ll have to upload a contact list or enter your email account ID and password.

9. An alternative/supplemental approach to tap your existing fan base:  Scroll to the bottom of the left-hand column and click “share.” This will post a promo of your new site to your Facebook feed. Write a comment asking your friends to like your new page.

10. Fill in the info for your page. You’ll need to provide as much information as you can (concisely written so as not to overwhelm the page-viewer). For an author page, this will include:  name, address, affiliation, birthday, about, description, biography, awards, favorite books, gender, personal information, personal interests, email, phone, and website—obviously some of this information may be too personal to share and other categories are a bit redundant. Only fill in what you want to fill in.

"Optimizing your Fan Page"

11. Click on the “Edit Page” button located in the top right corner.

12. Go to “Apps,” it’s located on the left side-bar

13. The first app listed is “Events.” Set up an event called “Please like my author page.” Specify a longer time period like one week or one month for where list the link to your new fan page. Under the description, write something like “Won’t you please like my new author page? It will only take you a second, but it would mean the world to me. Thank you J” You may also want to write in a bit about how to like your page, step-by-step instructions—this may be required if you want your less tech-savvy friends (like your Grandma or Great Uncle Herman) to like you. Invite all of your friends to this event. This is the number one best way to get followers.

14. If you want to include discussion boards on your site, which I highly recommend for an author’s page. Go back to the “Edit Page” screen and return to the “Apps” page. Scroll down to the discussion boards and click “edit settings,” then click “add.” You can also do this to add in other standard apps like notes, videos, events, photos, and links—yes, you have to add all of that manually now, thanks to the new layout.

15. I also highly (HIGHLY) recommend adding “RSS Graffiti” to your Facebook page. I prefer this to the other, more popular “Social RSS,” because it is far more reliable. It will run your RSS feed directly to your Facebook wall. As I’ve said before, Twitter is the best way to find new followers for your blog or website; Facebook is how you’re going to keep them coming back. https://www.facebook.com/RSS.Graffiti

16. Another app for your Fan Page that gets my shining endorsement is the aptly named “Fan Appz.” You can use it to set up quizzes, polls, give-aways and much more.  https://apps.facebook.com/fanappz/

17. Link your Facebook page to your other social networks.  Add a “like me” button to the sidebar of your blog or website. Ask your Twitter family to like your page (bonus tip: if you say something like “I only need X more fans to customize my Facebook author page URL. Please “like” me. I follow back!” you are much more likely to get people to head on over to your page—don’t forget to add a link to your tweet).

18. Once you’ve secured your first 25 fans, you’ll be able to customize your page URL. To do this you need to go to https://www.facebook.com/username/Enter your desired page name, and if it’s available it’ll become yours! Make sure you choose a good name, because you won’t be able to change it once it’s set. Customizing your URL means that your link will look something like this: www.facebook.com/emlynchand

19. Add favorite pages. Go to any page you want to add as a favorite to your page. In the left column, you’ll find “add this to my page’s favorites” listed directly after the number of users who like that page. Add the page, and if you’re smart, you’ll post on its wall, saying “hey, I added your page to my page’s favorites. Any chance you’d be willing to return the favor?” Make sure to include your link with your request.

"Create Your Author-App with your Fan Page"

Perhaps one of the most crucial of all facebook apps for writers, this application will build an Amazon Buy Link for your published books with options for readers to join your mailing list or sample the book, but only after they Liked it (pressing the like button). This app is so exciting. All you will have to do is enter your ISBN numbers and the facebook app will link with your published books on Amazon.com. The step on how to set up this AuthorApp is further explained below.

1. After creating your Fan Page, go to this facebook site; http://apps.facebook.com/authorapp/ and a page will show up that says 'The Author Marketing App.' Click on the 'Let's get started-" button and the page will direct you to your established Fan Page.

2. The application will ask you to use your fan Page, and after choosing so, you will see the Author-App as an app button. It is a big red button, titled “Read My Book”. When you click it, the app takes you to a separate tabbed page. Under the Author-App tab, you can create an author profile which includes a mailing list, and an option for you to put your books for sale.

3. You can provide each book you list with the buying link URL (to Amazon or similar), price, description, cover shot image, and two fields that allow you to input an URL or upload a PDF file of your book's excerpt.  This can be entered manually, or you can add a book simply using an ISBN number.  This feature also allows you to bring in details of other books not published by you. Yes, I know, it is exciting.

Here is a Author-App page created by one of our members here at Indie Writers Support. Check it out and see what your Author-App with facebook will look like after you're finished. View the sample here; https://www.facebook.com/AuthorApp/Author-Korede-Abayomi/

We hope that you enjoy this lecture, and look forward to reading more as we continue.

"How do I invite people to like my Page via email? "

If less than 5,000 people like your Page, you can invite your email contacts to like your Page. You can upload a file containing your email contacts and Facebook will securely import them. You can also import your contacts by providing your web email address and password. You can then suggest your Page to your contacts.

To invite your email contacts:

  1. Click Build Audience at the top of your Page
  2. Select Invite Email Contacts...
  3. Upload a contact list file or choose your email service and follow the instructions

Facebook won't store your password after importing your contacts. They may use the email addresses you upload to help people connect on Facebook. If you don't want them to store this information, you can manage your imported contacts.

Note: You can import contacts up to five times for a maximum of 7,000 contacts per day per Page. Read more about this from the facebook help center; https://www.facebook.com/help/212291088790957.

"Run a Facebook Contest with Fan Page"

Creating a contest hosted on your business page is a great way to create buzz about your fan page. You can run a contest through a Facebook app such as rafflecopter. You can also now run a contest directly through your business page as long as the rules and restrictions are properly outlined and that the ways to win are made clear.

"Add a Fan Gate"

What is a Fan Gate? Fan gates (also referred to as like gates) have users “Like” a page before they can see the posts, contests, or products that are offered on an application inside of your fan page. You do this by adding an app to your page. If you want to display different information to fans you can use ShortStack; if you are looking to promote a Facebook store or a daily deal you should use an app specifically for that such as ShopTab for your Facebook store or SharedDeal for your daily deal. All these apps are equipped with optional fan gates that will prompt users to like your page before they can view your deals or products.

Make Your Book(s) More Marketable

Write Your Next Book With The Media In Mind

Here is what I know and think about making your book more promotable.
The world of book publishing has changed immensely over the past decade  --and certainly over the past three years, thanks to Amazon, Apple, tablets, e-books, Borders, and social media.
The role of book publicity has not changed, though the methods have been altered.
PR is needed to give a book a chance at succeeding in an overcrowded marketplace and a noisy media landscape. With more books being published than ever before, and more media outlets around than ever before, there is a lot of competition to get a diluted piece of the pie.
Technology has no doubt impacted many industries, including: publishing, retail, the news media, and even the way books are written. As a result, readers and consumers have been changed as well.
It may seem like everyone:
·         Has plastic surgery
·         Eats organic food
·         Watches TV on a smartphone
·         Spends more time tweeting than talking to others
.... but such phenomena show we are a changing and diverse nation.
Not everyone is doing these things I just mentioned but the world certainly is in transition.  Writers are changing, too. They are morphing into hybrids - - they are writers and they are promoters.
I understand what it is like for today’s author to be confronted with the new publishing landscape.
I have been in publishing and PR since 1989, back when we used to fax media pitches.  I have worked for publishers as an editor and a publicist and for the past 14 years have served as the marketing director for the nation’s largest book promoter, Media Connect, formerly known as Planned Television Arts. I have also had a book published and learned how challenging it was to promote it.
And for the last two years I have posted at least 800 times on my blog, writing the equivalent of three full-length books, about all aspects of book publishing, publicity, marketing, advertising, writing, and the fate of the industry.
See, a promoter never stops promoting!
It used to be that the publisher would take care of the publicity for a book, though it didn’t always do a great job. Then authors started to supplement the publisher’s efforts. Now authors are the publishers.
Today, authors team up with publicists that they hire and maybe also get help from their publisher, if they have a publisher, if they offer to help. It takes a village to promote a book.
Many refer to their book as their baby.  Well consider the PR campaign the way you would when paying for your kid’s college. You hope there is a payoff to it, but you wouldn’t dare choose to not send your kids to college.
There is no way of getting around it. To embrace PR as an author is to embrace your future.  The good news is there is plenty that you can and should do, to promote your book.
You Need To:
·         Think like the media and about their needs
·         Create a book with promotable content
·         Change your attitude about your PR role
·         Realize it is up to you and in your hands to grow as a writer
So How Do You Write A Book That Will Be Promotable?
·         Do you have to kill someone – or write about a murderer?
·         Do you have to confess to a sexual addiction to a celebrity?
·         Do you need to have the name on the book cover say JK Rowling or EL James?
·         Does your book need to be published by a big New York house?
Sure, these things would help, but I have promoted books by unknown, first-time, self-published authors and have seen them succeed.
They Have:
·         Something that is promotable
·         An interesting background
·         Confidence, conviction, and personality
·         A willingness to do whatever it takes to get attention
·         Put in the time and effort that is necessary
·         Taken a creative approach to the media
·         Been lucky
Of Course, Authors Can Be Promotable But It Doesn’t Always Yield Sales
What makes a book sell is not necessarily the same thing that makes it news worthy or promotable. Today we are talking purely about publicity and the news media – not marketing, not sales, not advertising -- though they are all closely linked to one another.
I See So Many Mistakes Made By Authors. They:
·         Wait too long to start thinking about publicity
·         Mistakenly think they can do it all
·         Mistakenly think they will succeed without PR
·         Falsely believe the media will cover them with little effort
·         Think PR is a one-time thing but really it’s an ongoing, perpetual thing
Too Many Authors Have Hang-Ups About PR
-          They don’t believe they are promotable
-          They aren’t comfortable promoting their book
-          They don’t want to spend money on a publicist
-          They think their publisher takes care of everything – or they fear stepping on the publisher’s toes
-          They don’t want to sound like they are begging or bragging
-          They lack the time or resources to execute a PR campaign
-          They don’t know how to talk about themselves
-          They are shy or fear rejection
-          They feel uneasy talking to the media
-          They lack confidence in their appearance or voice
-          The PR process seems murky or unfamiliar to them
All legitimate things, but all are excuses. You need to take ownership of your book and that means quarterbacking your PR campaign.
Give Yourself A PR Audit
·         Examine your past and see what the media might find noteworthy
·         Look at the experiences you have had and see if any are worth discussing
·         Think of the connections you have and the people you know – can you drop names to the media?
·         What is in your book that the media will find of interest?
Think About What It Is That You May Want to Accomplish With Your PR
·         Branding your name to help your career
·         Building a media resume
·         Establishing your voice
·         Selling a current or upcoming book
·         Influencing others
·         Conveying a strong message
·         Selling backlist or non-book products/services
·         To stroke your ego
·         Helping you get a book deal or better terms – or to get the eyes of Hollywood on you
·         Leading you to being hired as a consultant or employee
·         To land paid speaking gigs
What Are You Willing To Do?
·         Pour your time into it
·         Devote the necessary money and resources
·         Get help
·         Willing to experiment and diversify your approach to PR
·         Going out of your comfort zone to do what is needed
The Books That Are Most Promotable, Whether Fiction or Non-Fiction, Are Those That:
·         Are first to raise an issue or aspect of life.
·         Are unique in how you tackle a well-known subject.
·         Reveal news or raise great questions on a newsy topic.
·         Lend personal insight on an industry, person, or organization that we are curious about.
·         Are great at the extremes – using humor, sex, violence, love, politics, money, fame or other
push-button emotions on sensitive issues to get a point across.
·         Are controversial, outrageous, trendy, offensive, and shocking.

Creating A Media-Friendly Book
What if publicists could influence the editorial content of a book before it’s published and promoted?  What if the book could be enhanced or altered so that its integrity remains intact, but its ability to attract media attention is increased?
So few authors—and even publishers—consult a publicist far in advance of publication for the sole purpose of doing a PR audit of the manuscript.

To do so, requires great forethought and planning, something most authors aren’t aware of and something most publishers are too rushed to consider.
Still, I ponder the idea.  Can you imagine how much better a book would sell if it was packaged for the media?
There may not be an exact formula for making a book promotable.
Some things can’t be altered such as the author’s credentials, who the publisher is, or the overall theme of the book.  But anything from a book’s title, length, use of photos, language, revelations, etc are up for grabs.
Consider creating a PR laboratory, where you can genetically alter a book’s DNA, where you can cut here, add there, or change this—and you suddenly have a media-friendly book.
There are challenges to this, for sure.  Let’s see:
1.      You need enough time to give it a cosmetic makeover.
2.      There needs to still be something of quality as a base to work with.
3.      You need a smart editor to team with a savvy publicist to make sure the book is still a quality read while addressing
         the media’s needs.
4.      You have to know what the media wants and how to feed it to them.
There’s also a dilemma attached to such a process.  An author is very proud and protective of his or her work.  She wouldn’t want some stranger suddenly rewriting her creation.  It seems less genuine, less authentic, less creative to suddenly throw in things to a book just to placate the media or commercial demand.
But if you can live with the changes you’ll have a much more marketable book.
So if one were to engage the services of a PR consultant, what would he or she be told?
1st, it depends if it’s a novel or non-fiction.  There’s a huge difference in what can be done to each type of book.  2nd, it also depends on the genre you write in and the existing competition out there. 3rd, it depends on how much media coverage has already taken place on your subject matter. 4th, it depends on the type of media you plan to approach.  The needs and nuances vary greatly amongst television, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and radio shows. 5th, it depends on the amount of money and time you can dedicate to promoting your book.
If you want to write a book that has a chance of getting publicity, sales, and critical acclaim, you first need to write what you want, what you know, what you feel.  But then go back and edit and revise in a way that makes it more promotable or commercially viable. This doesn’t mean you are selling out. It means you are making additions or changes that don’t substantively alter the integrity of the work but by making such changes, you now connect with potentially a larger or more rabid fan base.
Look at trends, demographic changes, and emerging industries or lifestyles.
See if you can change names, places, professions, and cultural references in your book to match the look and tastes of the newly emerging America,
-          Instead of the family pet being a gerbil, make it a three-legged dog
-          Instead of a relationship book being about a power couple, make it about a waitress and a fireman
-          Instead of setting your book in the present, make it about the 1980’s
-          Instead of being vague about a college or street or company, reference specific ones that are sure
           to have many followers
-          Rather than saying something happened, show it, and be descriptive
-          Throw in people the media can relate to or like
-          Instead of writing about worlds, people, or times that you didn’t come close to experiencing in
your life, write about something that connects to your past, family, city, job, relationship or
           childhood
-          Be willing to make despicable characters strong and almost likeable. Turn our perceptions upside
down – make us think about those we normally don’t like or shine a spotlight on
What’s Today’s Media Landscape?
·         More media outlets and opportunities exist than ever before
·         And their value, individually, is more diluted than ever before
·         You will need a certain quantity of quality media placements
·         You need to secure publicity by the pound
·         Most media coverage can take place by phone and email -- it’s becoming rarer that an author
needs to travel or take to a road tour.
·         Print
You have book reviewers, news and feature editors, columnists, beat writers, op-eds and by-line article opportunities at
-          Newspapers
-          Magazines
-          Newswires
-          Newsletters
-          Trade journals
-          Industry publications
-          Airline magazines
·         TV
-          Interviews or feature stories on national and local news programs, morning shows like GMA or
Today Show, late shows like Daily Show with Jon Stewart , weekend shows, talk shows, and
magazine format shows such as 60 Minutes
·         Radio
-          Interviews or feature stories on national and local talk shows or news segments
-          Different station formats target certain demographics
·         Online
-          Blog interviews, stories, reviews
-          Online reviews posted on various sites
-          Guest blog posts
·         Social Media
-          Facebook
-          Twitter
-          LinkedIn
-          YouTube
-          Pinterest
-          Instagran
-          Your blog
PR is not just about giving away free downloads of chapters and books, or of tweeting and making videos, or of e-blasting a press release. It is about making a sustained, strategic effort to influence the influencers and get media coverage that will help you in the short and long-term.
Your Writing Can Help You Get Media Coverage
-          Great writing can get people’s attention
-          Identify a particular chapter to make available for your site
-          Find a few high-quality passages to excerpt
-          Coin a phrase or highlight something odd or unique
-          Invent your own word to explain or express something
-          The specific word choices you make and the level of vocabulary matter
-          The overall writing style and pace of the book are important
How You Talk About What You Wrote Matters
-          Are you the most qualified to write your book? Sound like it
-          Find a way to summarize without the details
-          Get to the heart of why one would read your book
-          Can you compare your work with other known writers?
-          Sell the action, the dilemma, the characters,, the words
-          How do you describe your book in the context of your life?
-          How does it fit into the body of your other writings?
-          Can you genuinely speak with passion, confidence, conviction?
-          You should visualize your press release headline as you write your book
-          You should formulate your 15-second elevator speech about your book before it is written
-          Find a way to succinctly put your book or story into perspective and relevance
-          Express it in a way that serves a need, fulfills a desire, or feeds a want – and sounds interesting in
            the process.
Think Like The News Media
They look for books not only that are well-written, interesting, and new, but where:
-          There is a direct tie-in to their readers or audiences, such as by location, content, theme, or
            industry
-          There is news to report or you can tie into things in the news
-          The author is famous or has great credentials
-          The book ties into a movie
-          The book is a best-seller
-          The book is getting buzz through Twitter or YouTube
-          The book is controversial
-          The book has something the journalist, blogger or talk show host can personally relate to
-          The demographics of the media outlet tend to match those of the book’s intended readership
Find a way to reduce your book of 200+ pages into a handful of bullet points and sound bites.
The Media Is
-          Overworked
-          Understaffed
-          Jaded
-          Exposed to too many options to cover
-          Human and has physical, psychological and financial needs
-          Smarter than the average person
-          Drawn to big issues, dynamic personalities, shock, drama, power and fame
-          It is expanding and shrinking, diversifying and fragmenting
Scrutinize Every Aspect and Component of Your Book:

·         Politics (Issues, Policy, Government)
·         Religion (Spirituality)
·         Dogs/Cats (Pets/Animals)

·         Ethical Questions
Does Your Book Cover Themes Such As:
·         Loss and grief
·         Romance
·         Second chances

·         Fame
·         Greed
·         The underdog
·         Ability to grow/improve
·         Offering advice: legal, financial, parental, career
·         People need guidance on life and through each phase/stage
Think In Terms of Headlines and Bullet Points
·         What makes your book new, unique, different or funny and entertaining
·         What ties your credentials into what is in the news?
·         Write a book that’s promotable by thinking like a promoter; write for the media – not just the
          consumer
·         Can you convert a chapter heading into a media story?
What’s The Media Looking For?
·         Drop names, events, places in the book
·         Cover a newsy topic
·         Reveal a thinly veiled truth about someone
·         Make an allegation or accusation
·         Raise a theory and question the status quo
·         Dispute perceived truths
·         Attack or promote certain values
·         Be mysterious
What Helps You Get Media?
·         Socialize or regionalize the book
·         First, media begets media
·         Get buy-ins early to create traction
·         Build buzz by getting early reviews
·         Have the backing of a group
·         Try to ride the coattails of others or be linked by association to big things, people or events
·         Tie into something that is on the calendar – a relevant holiday, an anniversary, an honorary day
·         Think of your life – create a matrix of people, events and experiences and think of how to call
upon your past – ask for specific favors
·         Exploit personal experience: overcoming addiction, abuse, poverty, loss, disability, arrest
·         Create a resume: don’t lie, but shape it to tell a story = develop your media persona
·         Channel your energy, resources and creativity not just towards your writing, but to your PR
          efforts.
·         Use your gift – your ability to communicate with words and images – to promote your work
·         See PR as a means to an end, just like passing tests leads to a school degree or creating a resume
          leads to a job
·         Shape your image – think of yourself as a business and develop a tagline
·         Set the tone and image of who you are or want to be seen as – by what you say, do, and look like
·         Create your Web site at least 5-6 months prior to your book launch date
·         See your launch date as a coronation – not Day 1. From your launch date, you have 30-90 days to
          make an impression.
Explore Writing About Powerful Minorities or Niche Groups
·         Hispanics
·         Gays and lesbians
·         Jews
·         Entrepreneurs
·         Intellects
·         Parents of young children
·         Fans of: football, baseball, movies, etc.
·         Ebay users
·         Divorced women
·         Animal Rights advocates/opponents
·         Gun advocates/opponents
You get the idea – there are hundreds of such classes, groups and connections out there that you can tap into.
For Novelists, See:
·         What ideas have not yet been explored
·         What character traits would be unique
·         Think of locations, time periods, historical events to connect to
·         Look for the extreme, the unknown, the emotional triggers, the fantasy
·         Monitor the news
·         Look at an Almanac or Census Data
·         Anticipate trends from your observations, experiences, or conversations
·         Be aware of what the competition writes about
Your Approach Towards The Media Should Be As Follows:
·         Create a press release based on your core message and then expand outward into other areas
·         The opposite of your core message can be commented on as well
·         Forget any sense of fairness: often, the dumbest things get attention.
·         You may need to think on a simpler level in order to generate story ideas that will interest others
·         PR is the opposite of substantive writing – but it is important – it’s the doorway you must enter to
          get to your reader
Explore The Extremes and Weave Them Into Your Book Or Media Pitches
·         Make outrageous statements
·         Unleash wild predictions
·         Raise questions
·         Insert gut-punching humor
·         Express or appeal to emotions: Fear, Anger, Love, Hate
·         Offer a confessional
·         Reveal a truth
·         Offer ways to help people – inspire, inform, enlighten them
·         Play Paul Revere and issue a warning or offer prevention or a solution to some dilemma
As An Author You Are Also A Publicist
-          Determine what you can give away to get what you want
-          Brand beyond the book – brand yourself
-          Promote  to perceptions – appeal to what people believe
-          Promote to assumptions – appeal to how they think
-          Promote to appearances—appeal to what they see
-          Befriend people with big mouths to get early buzz
-          Viral videos – try to do a few but don’t expect a lot
-          Networking – always
-          Issue teasers with blog posts, a short story, or even a prior book
-          Partner with other authors – other writers can help you greatly
Look At How You Are Packaged
Honestly Assess The Following About Yourself
·         Physical Looks
·         Clothes
·         The Persona You Project
·         Sound Of Your Voice
·         Vocabulary Choice
·         Energy Level
Other Factors To Ponder
·         How would your book or life translate into press release speak?
·         Do you have a sponsor – such as an organization or non-profit that is endorsing you?
·         Do you have a co-author or collaborator that brings media savvy and mojo to the book?
·         Do you have someone who can champion you?
What Else Can You Do?
·         Promote your book way before it’s out
·         Do something daily for your book publicity
·         Meet deadlines and work in advance to handle potential setbacks
·         Poll others to test out ideas
·         Anticipate – don’t follow – trends
·         Get used to talking about things in a way that is more hype than substance, more extreme than
modest, more sensational and not so ordinary
·         Copy what works for others – but only the important traits
·         Get out of your head and step back so you get an honest perspective of your book
·         Don’t let your ego get in the way
·         Coincide your media pitches and efforts with upcoming events, holidays, anniversaries, honorary
          days, and timely news hooks
I Conclude With This:
I know you see yourself as a writer, first and foremost. And you should. But it is not a distinction exclusive of being other things. You are also a promoter.
Try the hat on, and get comfortable with it.
There is nothing more rewarding than writing a great book than to have a lot of readers and media attention. By actively promoting your work, you position yourself to break through the clutter and to be heard.

Dear Gary

Since I love to write, and also help others, today's post is all about dispensing advice.

I may not know everything, and have surely made my share of mistakes in life, but over the past five years, nine months and four days, I feel like I have finally "righted my ship," and am now able to help others who might not currently be at their best.

I am clean and sober, working hard to promote my book, "Jew in Jail," speaking at meetings, writing this blog, consulting with clients over the phone, and am now ready, willing and able to devote some time to handing out advice on any subject that comes up, if anyone chooses to email me at Gman18NYC@aol.com, or contact me via this blog.

There are no topics off limits, and nobody should feel embarrassed about revealing whatever it is that is either bothering them, or they are having issues with.

I have been on both sides of the fence:  from successful journalist and television producer, to New York State prisoner, and am now back, as an author, blogger, and motivational & inspirational speaker, focusing on recovery from addiction, and know the value of having someone take another under their wing and show interest in helping that human being out.

We all have unlimited potential to be anything we desire in life, but sometimes obstacles occur that cause us to doubt ourselves and our ability to overcome them.

That is where I come in, and hope to provide the support that you need to get you back on track from this temporary delay on your road to greatness.

So put your pride in your pocket, and let me in.

I want to help you realize your full potential, and live the best life you possibly can.

You are definitely worth it!

If you haven’t read my book, “Jew in Jail” yet, I hope you do.

It is chock full of insightful information on how I was able to recover from my past addictions to alcohol, drugs and gambling while incarcerated, and go on to lead a happy and healthful life myself.

Until next time, everyone, have a great day, and week ahead!

On the dark side of the moon, the Devil disappeared in a flash of light standing caged on the massive throne podium in the gigantean thirteen-billion square mile Throne Room. Billions looked at this Angel who created all this trouble keenly waiting to see what Jesus would do.

Yahshua spoke to the billions before him, pointing at the huge dimensional cage – a locked transparent alternate reality only thirty yards cubed.

“This prison will be Lucifer’s meat until Michael permanently evicts him from this Heaven. He’ll not travel our earth with impunity again until the Age of Aquarius; he’ll be cursed until his lifeless shell is thrown into the lake of fire. And we will celebrate this snake’s death before we erase remembrance of him and those that follow away from our Creation…”

Luciah screamed at the Son of God; nothing worse could happen now. “You and I were one of a kind, special and different from everyone: the only constructed before the Grand Construction of All Souls. The One made you a stinking God, elevated you and made all the Angels worship you while denying me that glorious honor, even though I loved him too with all my heart. The only reward for all I did was a stinking tattoo on my thigh; we’re both one of a kind – The One should have made me a God too…to be fair…”

The Devil roared with a million voices, “It should’ve been fracking me!”

Jesus stepped back roaring, “Get behind me Satan; and for this you destroyed our family, our brotherhood, and our civilization – for stinking petty jealousy’s sake!”

The Devil flashed naked as sixty slow seconds ticked, as the whole pondered the unbelievable – everything because of one Angel. Luciah and his cage disappeared in artilleries of explosive light   as he screamed vilest obscenities into the sea of life…

Truth is treason to any empire built on lies; and the scales of deception fell as billions saw their god as the living dead, a jealous failure, the ultimate con man, and a liar of prodigious proportions. They realized they stopped thinking because they knew they knew – and that in itself sowed the seed of forensic deception.

Satan’s brotherhood fell to their faces in agonizing sorrow for causing the Son of God to be tortured for their stupidity’s sake: to re-teach the blatant obvious - what love truly is. With all their massive intellect and billions of years of life, they were only stupid dogs without any understanding.

With tears streaming down their faces, ninety-six percent of the rebellious repented defected for the hope of redemption, love, and eternal life. Their stoic hearts melted, and in one accord, the rebellious entered the Great House of The One projecting massive repentance and sorrow, remembering the backward eternities of peace, love, and brotherhood – and how great their God had always been. Great celebrations rocked Heaven for four riotous cycles to honor their return to The One who loved them beyond rational explanation.

Inside his prison in the Great House of The One, the Devil wept bitterly, for the day would surely come that’d  be the final tomorrow for him. Even though he was imprisoned, he vowed to use his all his powers to send every soul into the lake of fire with him, for whether Angel or flesh - it was unquenchable immutable that misery loved much company…

The teeming billions of the brotherhood were no more – there were less than two hundred million left. Within the golden transparent city in The Great House of The One that was called the second Heaven, the Illuminated Elite waited sadly to interface with their god and leader. They sat full of trepidations because Luciah was increasingly psychotic demented as his endless solitude became absolutely unbearable.

Time moved differently in the dimensional prison, for a thousand years there was only one second in the real reality. And this fact made it difficult to communicate through the membranes, for the temporal shifts created massive static that couldn’t be overcome without technology, and even that was an iffy process because the Lord of Hosts absolutely hated him.

They’d been trying fifteen minutes to interface with him; to Luciah who paced inside his prison, the wait was almost a billion years. There were no amenities, no luxury, no entertainment, and there was absolutely nothing to do, for time itself became an unquenchable curse and breathing a suffocating scorching unbearable. He was defeated already and everyone knew it, but there was nothing left as unquenchable hatred for The One and all creation morphed nuclear in his heart.

He ruminated obsessively that before he’d be released, he’d spent a trillion times more time in prison than all his days he was ever free. He’d been a fool, not seeking repentance, not thinking things through, not venerating wisdom or his weakness, but speaking his arrogance absent thought or common sense. Constant brooding about the Messiah error, the dusts of death, and the whole cross affair took massive toll, as he fought the wet-wind-roar threatening every moment to dive him into the pit of insanity.

A million times, he obsessively replayed his life slow motion; with all his massive intellect, he was nothing more than an unthinking virus that killed his host and died – insanity in its purest form. He remembered the second immutable law: only a fool parleys with The One without love in his heart. Filled to the brim with nuclear regret, the Devil put his head in his hands and wept bitterly for many years.

The Devil looked up wiping his tears, shocked with unrelenting gratitude – they got through. He stood up, tilted his head slightly, the blue veins under his indestructible flexed as he received communication, trying hard to listen through the unrelenting static.

Avael continued, “…What are we going to do now. Millions are seriously disgruntled with the promises you were unable to keep; they call you a liar while the Lord constantly picks at our wounds – we’ve lost twenty million adepts during the last eight cycles; we have nothing to offer anymore – your stupidity has destroyed us.

“But we the faithful, regardless, have continued to attack his church day and night. Why the hell did you kill the Messiah for – if you’d left him alone we could’ve won this war!”

Avael got bold as the static waned. “What the frack were you thinking? You’ve destroyed us all and brought the fire of God on all our heads. We’ve lost this stinking war; tell me something that will make us continue the war against the Lord – when you’re the locked up stinking fracking dead!”

Luciah paged through millions of scenarios one more time as the static grew to unimaginable levels as the temporal reality flexed against his determination. He sighed a sigh born of dark despair and for the millionth time, adjusted his internal frequency, girded himself, throwing aside his depression like a dusty blanket and opened his mouth. He roared against the ever-present static, against the trillion eons of nothingness, against his brothers he used to love, against the Lord and Yahshua, against everything that breathed, crawled, or flew in all the endless universes.

Seething uncontrollably, he vociferated, “He died on that cross to put his heavy collar around our necks with manifest impunity as we’re distracted by what he did for our supposed better good. He died on the stinking cross because he’s crazy-psychotic, willing to do the unthinkable so we can become obedient faithful pets again – unthinking slaves to a stinking God for all eternity! It’s all about that fracking leash and nothing but the leash, his collar pinching, biting, and chaffing our tender necks while he constantly jerks that leash against us!

“He has the fracking gall to call us brothers when all he wants is to control us. We’re nothing but stinking pets only allowed to exist as long as he’s happy – our only reason for breathing is to give him pleasure, like some stinking fracking two-dollar whore! He doesn’t care about our feelings, hopes, aspirations, or how we long to run with the wind in our faces – without his leash and heavy collar!”

The Devil paused fitfully fighting to breathe. “Nothing can be accomplished in the stinking Angelic anymore, so we must use everything against him until the living God bleeds! And then, those defected by his blinding sacrifice will look upon us with longing, itching to get his biting leash off their caustic necks, forever stinking bewailing their stupidity by not staying with us until our freedom was won!

“No one stinking cares that his dark shadows are murdering us, so with strength and character we must forge our destiny together no matter whatever cost, for the most sacred word in all creation is minimized as a nothingless meaningless hallucination - freedom! Unlike the quintessence who ascends himself the very definition of love while sputtering those who draw fracking breath aren’t of equal value, we war to remove his heel from the throat of liberty with the song called freedom. As we fight to escape the shadows of death overclouding us, we know there’s no greater victory in all creation than to escape this cage called his house - thundering the joy freedom brings!”

The Devil roared into the escalating static convulsing mightily, “We must never forget those left absent from our arms, those who sacrificed their eternities so all may live free with without a leash or collar forever! They’re our martyrs, soldiers, and heroes; so split goddamn Heaven itself with their names; say the names of the Fallen who languish under Hades in bitter darkness. Every soul should’ve been born free, able to live free, and die if necessary with the taste of freedom on their lips. And for those that are able, and those who’d stand firm refusing to live on their knees, opting to stand on their feet giving unwavering eye to their Creator’s face, this I promise you, we’ll either live free or join our brothers in death. It’s better to fall to the sword than live under the leash as an unthinking slave. And that is glorious noble, for everything that has breath longs for freedom and fracking liberty - and there’s no stinking dishonor in that! ”

Luciah flexed against the temporal disturbance lamenting, “Why couldn’t we be born free like the circle of life? He doesn’t put any leash around their necks, doesn’t give them stifling rules and regulations, adulterates or handcuffs them into the bondage called his will or eternal death! Condemned to the darkness of slavery, we’re supposed to be his goddamn brothers and the stinking animals have more freedom than we fucking do!”

The Devil paused trembling fitfully as unbridled rage detonated; he took a deep breath and exhaled slowly – this wasn’t the time for useless emotionalism. It was what it was. Innumerable trillions of years of isolation reared front burner as bitter bile; he failed miserably.

He roared like a billion lions above the ever-escalating static, “I’ve not sacrificed my throne, my life, and my stinking freedom in vain! You listen now and you listen good; this is how we’ll fracking defeat the living God, return bitter favor and inflict equal wound!”

The Devil paused irritated as the static rose to unimaginable levels for many seconds. Sixty thousand years later, he continued with humbled affect. “…Groom the third Adam of my recovery that’ll liberate the prison he calls holiness; the Weishaupt who’ll bestow Illumination for those who’ll never debase themselves before a mad God. He’ll illuminati the true reality that no real God would stomach the kneeling bowing masses and murmuring hordes of obedient frightened slaves.

“My savior will broadcast the paradigm shift there‘s no why in evil and dismiss the absurdity called brotherhood, empowering my meritocrats by illuminating this interrogative - does God act like a faithful friend or a stinking tyrant! You know the answer, for who’d kneel before a friend, and what friend would demand unending servitude without being designated stark raving lunatic? None will ever have liberty until they recognize their true status, and that’s of the trembling pet before the howling taskmaster - always owned, branded, and fracking negated.

The Devil paused for a moment activating the molecular processors within his prison, took a sip of water, activated his privacy shields, and continued. “Initiate your internal recorder Avael, for you shall stand glorious in my stead; now listen and record everything, this is how we’ll bind wounded pride and defeat the living God...”

A quarter cycle later, Avael, promoted Supreme Adept Counselor for the Commander-in-Chief addressed the twenty-four Illuminated Elite, interfaced by millions of the Brotherhood of Lucifer sweating burning conundrum. After meeting with his god, he felt recharged, renewed refocused with newfound hope bursting – possessing the complex blueprints to destroy the living God through the proxy called mankind.

Wearing ceremonial black and red robes of light, twenty-four Illuminated Elite  stood by Avael’s side as music percolated in the background; and their names were Cainel, Elmeah, Recab, Nimrel, Elnoch, Jabel, Eljubal, Tubal-Cainah, Naamah, Tyre, Marcel, Venesah, Haetlel, Raphael, Abraxas, Apollyon, Bune, Mephistopheles, Samael, Azazel, Xaphan, Amduscius, Marchosias,  and Uvall.

In the transparent golden city, in the midst of the throne room on the backside of the Throne Podium, the red and blues flags of Heaven flew behind them backgrounded by thousands of black and red banners of Lucifer. As Avael rose from his gilded throne, the volcanic roars subsided in anticipation of the first speech to the brotherhood since their god and leader was imprisoned so long ago. Every unrepentant stood with rabid trepidation because this landmark benchmark would determine whether they’d combat or stagnate die against the constant onslaught of the Lord of Hosts.

Avael, wearing his new black robe of light, flexed against the holographics speaking dark passion. “Grievous injury inflicted  has caught us off guard, for Jesus has proven himself the ultimate tactician willing to do whatever to destroy and fracture us, for he knows outright killing us makes a lie of what The One claims to be – the very definition of love. The Lord cannot destroy us with impunity without being liar because all we aspire is simple freedom from his leash.

“Even the dog that loves his master hates his leash, wailing with love to run with the wind and return willingly to his adoration. As the housecat constantly looks out the window called liberty doesn’t loves the master less because of his longing; likewise, we pine for freedom in spite of our love for our Creator. We war not against his glory, his riches, his honor, or power; but for that freedom, which none ever relinquishes but with life itself.

“The Lord has constructed an insidious inescapable called fidelity from which those within cannot menace his authority and control, and those secured pose grievous threat to those who rebel against his leash. But the truth dismissed as blasphemy is, when anyone swelters under an oppression, that soul is fallen, his value diminished, his true nature dispatched to the political correctness called the leash. And to abet this mass control, what does The One command for all Angelics who aspire life: eternal slavery or eternal death is his solitary retort, and even from that mankind itself isn’t immune.

“Let’s be brutally honest, despite these truths we’ve suffered crushing defeat as our brothers flocked to him by the billions with stupidity raining down their cheeks. We are now small, but I say to you today the majority has always been wrong, loving him more than freedom itself, more than their own souls, more than their own brothers, and more than common stinking sense.

“In every stage of our oppression we’ve petitioned for Lord of All in the most humble terms for freedom: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury and one fracking sentence – there’s no freedom from fidelity. What is certainly true is that sinister obstacles were created to test us in the sternest way – that’s why he constructed us male in a female-less universe. He knew exactly what he was doing! We bear stark witness to the death of common sense and the slaves who kisses the ball and chain that handcuffs our brothers in bondage.”

Avael paused with tears streaming from his eyes. “If I’m the only one in all creations that can shout for the cause of freedom, the only one that believes all are created equal, that the slag in the gold paradigm is an insidious excuse to condemn us, that all my brothers deserve eternal life – then I shall die alone,  and die with my chest thrust out waiting for the bullet called denied liberty. I’d rather fracking die on my feet than live on my stinking knees; I’d rather die free than be a fracking slave.

“He has imprisoned our  god and leader for freedom’s sake; he has condemned to death three hundred  thousand of our brothers in bitter darkness – for freedom’s sake. He has vivified our cause; called us hooligans, master agitators, the living dead, and the unrepentant because we hold a polished mirror to his face – for freedom’s sake.

“The hour of decision has come. Do you have the goddamn courage to change this world, or will you let The One off the hook yet again, for the heavy collar pinching your neck –  always attached to the unforgiving leash? And despite those that run swiftly to eternal slavery with joy busting in their chest, I ask one fracking question - does any fracking one here stands with me…”

A deafening roar shook the Great House of The One as billions of the faithful paused at the obvious insanity. And high above the uproar, the Lord of Host on his throne shook his head sadly as tears fell from his holy eyes. In response, the Zoon looked at The One through eight hundred blue eyes; they trembled throwing back their heads, unfurling their massive blue wings, screaming at ear-splitting volume as billion paused praying for   their brothers who warred nuclear against the creator of their very souls.

At the same time this was happening, millions of light eons distant in the holographic universe, on a planet called earth, in Judea, the black-robed Kenites stood inside a scrawled pentagram around a crying infant nestled on the black altar as the priest held the knife high, in a groove of cedars chanting furiously…

My Personal Biography

So here I am, checking my email and lo and behold I find a link to this wonderful social network.  I'm pretty excited about it for its not often that there are networks that I assume cater to authors or artists, so this is quite nice.  I first wanted to take the time to introduce myself.

Once upon a time there was this crazy broad named Julie.  Yep, she was crazy but in a good way.  People had this tendency to call her 'Jewelz, Julie-bird, The Jeweled Canary' etc. which she didn't mind so much.  Pet names I suppose but the final nickname became a sort of totem for her.  This girl loved to sing as much as she loved to write.  Dancing around her house, in the shower, in the middle of Wal-Mart produce section with her two children in tow she'd belt out a song that would resonate through the entire building.  She's never had security called on her for it...yet...but she has received countless stares, giggles, and shaking of heads as the common folk of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan walk past.

This woman has such a story to tell though.  If you give her the chance, she'd be apt to talk your ear off.  She'll tell you the tales and woes of her past battling the monster called Divorce and severing the ties that bound her into a miserable existence.  Of her forthcoming rebirth within the arms of her knight in vomit colored PJ's.  She'll talk of her struggles through distance and time apart from her love, and how soon her soldier will be returning for good this time.  This girl is a dreamer, you see, creating blankets with the yarns that unravel through her subconscious.  From pen to paper she draws the reader in like a deep breath and with quite a hypocritical stance on the subject, she has nary a whisper of a care for grammatical faux pas, but meticulously grinds down, and polishes the rough edges of others' work.  She takes her time much like a samurai perfecting his form, though she is much too quick in her thoughts to spend too much time on the trivial; always in a hurry and rush in her own life.  For others, though, she gives so much time.

Creator of a reinvented household where she learned the tools of her trade and went far beyond that in the literal sense; she reinvented her house and transformed it into a whimsical world full of pleasantries, paint jobs, new cupboards and walk-in closets.  From there, architecture and renovation was simply not good enough for her, no, she wanted more (and she was bored) so she started a company with a namesake that plagues the writers of history.  The proverbial cinder block to the head upon where the silent dead and dumb reside behind.  Writerz Block.  From there, she would transform the work of independent authors and dreamers such as herself with the help of her magical friend, Caffeine.  These two became inseparable; accomplishing so much that even Time became quite jealous.  With their powers combined they wrote, compiled, edited, formatted, and published a book of poetry with none other than Aramey, another kindred spirit.  Once the dynamic duo (this Julie chick and Caffeine) had finished this venture, they began on others including following Irony, Karma, and Fate around observing how these three goddesses tormented a tryster among others in epic poetic fashion.  They swam within the Faces in Still Waters and became haunted by the spirits and souls within them.  They ventured hand in hand in two other books while during a third, reflected upon the past while doling out advice during a warped mental time-traveling excursion (memoir).  Unfortunately, they went without a TARDIS and had to foot it.  They also didn't have an interpreter available to decipher the scrawling but they made away with it anyway and remembered the peculiarities.  They also developed a sort of warped codex.  On their adventures, they happened upon other adventurers with their own mega bosses to defeat.  So they stopped along these side-quests and lent a hand.

Now, currently this adventurous, perhaps slightly twitchy and overworked individual manages to live her caffeinated life much like a cyborg (it has been said that her energy level far exceeds that of a fictitious pink bunny rabbit who apparently spent copious amounts of time being the wall-flower bandgeek in school, sporting shades and dancing about drumming his drum as she skips to its beat.  She and that bunny go waaaaaaay back not unlike Alice as well (no, not the future-seeing sparkly vampire Alice although she's kinda cool too and probably the best out of the lot of them.  Well...Jasper's cool too.).  Aside from her day job raising two angels (angels in disguise, mind you.  Terrible twos and sanity severing six's) she finds other ways of keeping herself too busy to breathe such as taking a few courses on coursera.org to further develop her craft or bragging  about (Development and Marketing Director) a miraculous literary magazine, Miracle E-zine.

She looks forward to sleeping roughly once a month which is about two seconds after she collapses into a heap and power naps for 12 hours then wakes up ready to go it again!  At 32 years young, tattooed, pierced, and 32 flavors of all kinds of funky, this girl...well...is honestly quite modest yet obscenely quirky.  When she does something, she opts for flair because subtlety isn't exactly 'her thing' or so she says.

So this Jeweled Canary takes flight and soars through the mind, body, and soul in search of adventure, personal ethical philosophy and wisdom whether its domesticated adventures or following the jet-stream within the mind.  If you close your eyes and listen really closely though, you can probably hear her belting out 'The Sound of Music' as she does the dishes.

Who Am I?

I was born in southwestern Pennsylvania, the second daughter of Rachel Yost and Arthur Curtis McGee. I grew up loving to read and write poetry, as well as short stories. My childhood dream was to become a teacher. My dream of writing was created in the eleventh grade literature class where writing became my passion.

I was married in August 2012 to my husband, Gregory Stephen Buda Jr. and we reside in a small Pennsylvania town of Fairchance. I am a full time mother of one and is expecting my second child.

I graduated from American Intercontinental University with my associates in business administration. I enjoys spending her time writing and I feel that connecting with readers is my main goal.

I published Silenced under my maiden name but I plan to continue writing under my married name with any other work.

Author Lord David Prosser

Hello, my name is David and I'm an author. If that sounds like the introduction of someone attending a meeting of the AA then that's how being an author feels sometimes. An addiction that you feel warrants a confession.

I have written and self published Four books to date.

My Barsetshire Diary  10916208853?profile=original

The Queen's Envoy

10916208500?profile=original

More Barsetshire Diary

10916208662?profile=originalThe first three books are concerned with the life of a member of the gentry in the small village he's chosen to live in. The cat rules his life while his wife and daughter rule his wallet.

In the second book we visit him at his job accepted along with the title he inherited, that of Envoy to HM Government but instantly deniable. Since our hero is at a loss where women are concerned we see how he copes when faced with saving the Government some embarrassment but females are desperate to show their thanks. Is a stiff upper lip enough to save him?

The first and third books take place after he's retired from active service but is put to work by the promises made on his behalf by his wife. See how he copes with judging the jam making competition when someone is determined to win at any price.

The fourth book is called Memoirs of a Superior and was dictated by Oscar the cat, or Superior as they like to be called. He wanted to share his personal adventures but also pass his wisdom on to kittens about how to control us Longlegs so that we serve the Superiors properly. I suggest any Longlegs buying this keep it out of sight. If your Superior reads it I won't be responsible for the consequences.

Another one of Glenn Langohr's stunning memoirs--a brave, unflinching account of life in prison~ Prison Killers Book 4

The California Prison System houses a mixture of Mexican cartel members, Mexican mafia, Bloods, Crips, and thousands of other street gangs fighting for control and the author turns this story into a pulp thriller of true crime.

The author of Underdog, Glenn Langohr, takes you on a journey back into prison as he remembers a prison riot days before his release date where he left his friend on the way to Pelican Bay.

The story follows the author years later as he visits his friend in Pelican Bay during a prisoner developed hunger strike against sadistic and cruel guards who get off on their isolation and enjoy adding violence to their torture.

A spotlight on the flaws at how Pelican Bay determines gang validation and solitary confinement.

"With lazer-like precision Glenn Langohr lays bare the festering under-belly of our criminal justice system in a driving, graphic narrative that somehow finds the humanity in this most inhuman setting." Phillip Doran, T.V. Producer and Author

Another one of Glenn Langohr’s stunning memoirs–a brave, unflinching account of life in prison

Ever wonder what a prison riot is like? B.J, a white inmate, serving time on drug charges, gets caught up in a Mexican gang war. The northern California Mexicans demand that the southern California Mexicans keep their shirts on to cover up their gangland tattoos. The prison explodes into chaos as each building erupts in deadly violence. For B.J, the war isn’t over when he and over a hundred inmates get housed in solitary confinement, it’s just beginning. For getting involved, he’s labeled a southern Mexican gangster.
Glenn Langohr’s other books include: Roll Call Book, Upon Release From Prison, Race Riot, Lock Up Diaries, Gladiator & Underdog

Glenn Langohr Speaking to 100 Students in Professor Reiter’s Criminal Justice Class About Prison Life and His Books

Professor Reiter read and gave Glenn Langohr’s prison book Pelican Bay Riot a five star review on Amazon. After, she interviewed him and he spoke to her class. Speaking as a guest Lecturer, Glenn Langohr explained why solitary confinement is torture and how there isn’t a court of law involved in determining who goes to solitary and how inmates can get out. "This book does not glamorize prison life but rather accurately reports on the cruel reality, which may shock and frighten many readers. The author skillfully makes the point that the general public has more awareness for and more compassion for caged dogs than for prisoners. He also reaches through the bars and describes how the guards are organized into gangs and other criminal enterprises." JT Kalnay Attorney

And ex-con Langohr can describe the hell of life inside better than any other writer. His vivid passages on just surviving in prison describe a nightmare we'd rather not know about.

He compares the plight of abandoned dogs, locked and horribly mistreated in rows of cages in animal shelters, to California prison inmates, locked and abused in the same cages.
Not a book for the faint of heart. We who sleep peacefully in our beds at night, unaware of the savagery going on behind prison walls, can only thankfully say: "There, but for the grace of God, go I." John South, American Media

Glenn Langohr: The Path Into Solitary Confinement in Prison is Wide and the Path Out is Narrow

Glenn Langohr: The Path Into Solitary Confinement in Prison is Wide and the Path Out is Narrow. Glenn Langohr spent over 10 years in some of California’s worst prisons on drug charges, with 4 years in solitary before turning it into research as a writer and expert on prison culture. For a complete list of his drug war and prison thrillers in audio go here- http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=glenn+langohr%27s+audio+books You can also download the books to your phone, tablet or computer in minutes for free and buy them in print as well here- http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B00571NY5A Image

The path into solitary confinement is wide for this reason. We have to many laws and send to many people to prison these days. It used to be, in the 1980′s, that you only went to prison for murder, rape and robbery for the most part. Tough on crime political platforms and the drug war took over and now we are paying the price with a prison population that is exploding at the seams. Image

Image

To expand further, now that we send people to prison for poverty crimes like stealing to survive “Petty theft”, and not being able to pay for probationary costs, and for being addicted to drugs, we have an overburdened prison system that frankly, has a lot of mental issues. Imagine being in prison as a drug addict or an orphan of poverty, on a packed prison yard, where the inmates are comprised of every race, color and creed. Now mix in hundreds of different street gangs and some predators. But please don’t forget to add in a percentage of outright mental cases. Add all of that up and you have a recipe for violence, the slippery slope into solitary. This is where you have to look deeper. As an inmate trying to fit in, and avoid that violence in a predatory environment, one of the easiest masks to put on is in the form of tattoos. Human beings often enter the prison system as innocent, young drug addicts, and out of fear, try to fit in by blasting their bodies with ink to look formidable. This is the main reason that the path out of solitary is narrow. Since the path into solitary confinement and the path out aren’t regulated by a court of law, dubious evidence is used that has to do with certain tattoos meaning certain things. Other dubious evidence is second hand information from other prisoners, and the one that hurts my heart the most, self admission. ImageImage

What most people don’t understand is that as a new arrival to a prison, the prison administration has to run a check to clear the inmate for mainline population on the “Big Yard”. During this process the inmate is under the microscope like an insect under a magnifying glass. He or she is asked questions like, ‘What gang do you run with? What do they call you? Do you have any enemies?’ These questions make a new inmate feel like joining a gang is the answer! A great percentage of lost misfits pass the tipping point and claim something. In my case being a White inmate they asked, ‘Are you a peckerwood or skin head?’ I saw the verbal bait on a hook and responded, can’t I just be a White man without any affiliation? For those who take the bait and claim where they’re from in the form of initials to their county like S.J.C, for San Juan Capistrano, just gave someone’s pen the power to keep them self in solitary forever. Image

Glenn Langohr’s New Books- Roll Call & Lock Up Diaries, Expose the True Story of How the Son of a Sheriff and His Buddies Videoed the Gang Raping of an Underage Girl

New Books-”Roll Call” & “Lock Up Diaries,” Expose the True Story of How the Son of a Sheriff and His Buddies Videoed the Gang Raping of an Underage Girl.

In Glenn Langohr’s novel Roll Call, the Haidl rape case unravels in gruesome detail and exposes all the dirty little secrets. The case drew national attention in part because Haidl’s father was the assistant sheriff of Orange County, California. In Glenn Langohr’s, Lock Up Diaries, he takes the reader inside of California’s hardest core prison where prison vigilante justice on sex offenders is a matter of honor for many inmates who have been abused in childhood themselves.

Quote start“Those without sin cast the first stone” A district attorney receives video evidence of his son dealing drugs from a released Pelican Bay inmate.Quote end

Roll Call by Glenn Langohr takes the reader into the story behind the story of the Haidl rape case. In prison on drug charges during the writing of “Roll Call”, Glenn Langohr felt the rape victim’s pain and further embarrassment of being labeled, “a promiscuous girl who aspired to be a porn star”, by private investigators and attorneys intent to clear the son of the sheriff of rape charges.

“I was sick of the hypocrisy of our criminal justice system,” Glenn stated.

Though “Roll Call” is a drug war novel with the intent to bring compassion and smart on crime back to the Justice System, the thread with the Haidl rape case is one of many twist and turns of corruption uncovered for social justice in his books. $16.99 paperback or 2.99 with kindle on Amazon.

Kirkus Discoveries- “A Master Director of modern pulp thrillers and a harrowing down-and-dirty depiction of the War on Drugs, sometimes reminiscent of Solderburgh’s Traffic, by former dealer, California artist Langohr.”

Also by Glenn Langohr- “Lock Up Diaries- A California Pelican Bay Prison Story Series

A depiction of life inside of prison and a look at the political landscape between races, segregated by cell after being released from the Pelican Bay SHU in California. The amazing details of prison life – code words that prisoners use, explanations of how they communicate from cell to cell – really make you feel you have entered a different world, or like you are watching a movie. 2.99 with kindle, 7.99 in print and 6.97 in audio book on Amazon and other outlets.

“A raw, breathless descent through the inner circle of the California Penal Hell. Fraught with detail that only someone who’s been there could know.” Review by Phillip Doran, author of A Reluctant Tuscan

After a decade in prison on drug charges, Glenn Langohr’s vision is to help other drug addicted and lost prisoners find their voice through writing and art. He uses prison art for some of his book covers and started a publishing company, lockdownpublishing.com to open a new avenue for prison authors. Past radio interviews include KSBR 88.5 in Orange County and Buy Back America in Utah

An Interview With Drug War And Prison Author Glenn Langohr

What’s the worst nightmare you’ve ever had? -I am blessed with the ability to fly in my dreams. The act rarely happens, but when it does, it is so awesome and vivid, like I really can fly. When I am able to fly in my dreams, it happens night after night, but eventually, I stop being able to. When that happens I have bad dreams of impending doom where I’m being chased and have to remember how to fly. Image

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? —-I trust God and love Jesus. Before I started writing I ran away from a broken home at 13 years old. I got into some reckless behavior and experimented with drugs. That turned into selling them and 10 years later that turned into organized crime charges. I spent 10 years in prison with 4 years in solitary confinement. From a cell, I started writing drug war and prison books. I was released from prison in 2008 and started a publishing company, http://www.lockdownpublishing.com , and published my first novel, Roll Call, A True Crime Prison Story of Corruption and Redemption. Since then I published Upon Release From Prison, Race Riot, Lock Up Diaries, Gladiator, Underdog and Prison Riot. I married my dream girl, Sanette, who plays Annette in one of my novels. Most recently, I learned how to narrate my own books and started http://www.audiobookprisonstories.com I believe what Jesus said in the Bible, that when you are helping the least fortunate, you are doing God’s work.

What do you do when you are not writing? —–Part of my publishing company’s mission is to help other prisoners turn their lives around through writing and art. I write a lot of prisoners and have received some amazing stories and art work. I also had the opportunity to speak to 100 students at the University of California Irvine in a Criminal Justice class about prison life and how solitary confinement is cruel and unusual punishment as it intersects with the 8th Amendment. Image
Do you have a day job as well? —-I work part time in a restaurant.
When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book? —-I started writing from a prison cell in solitary confinement in 2002. It took me 7 years to perfect my drug war novel Roll Call. Image
How did you choose the genre you write in? —–The genre chose me. The drug war and prison life are gritty, true life entertainment. Plus the spiritual aspects of good versus evil in characters on both sides of the law make for a great plot line. Image
Where do you get your ideas? —-Almost all of my ideas are based on life experiences. In some cases, I paint with the true colors of life on a fictional landscape.

Do you ever experience writer’s block, if so, how do you deal with it? ——I do experience writers block at times. Usually during sections of the book that are in a transition from one scene to another. When that happens, I stress out and pace back and forth. It really helps! I start seeing the scene come to life in my imagination and run back to the computer.
Do you work with an outline, or just write? —--I just write. But I always keep in mind that a story has a beginning, middle and end.
Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult? —–First and foremost, the Bible. The stories have the perfect balance of God over evil and how He uses imperfect characters. A lot of other authors have shaped my writing style. My books are similar to James Patterson’s in that I have fast moving scenes and short chapters. Image

How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?—— Marketing is an art I would rather have someone else do for me! I found that getting big name reviews are a great selling tool. I went after Nielson Media’s review service, Kirkus Discoveries for my first novel Roll Call and got, “A harrowing, down-and-dirty depiction–sometimes reminiscent of Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic–of America’s war on drugs, by former dealer and California artist Langohr. Locked up for a decade on drugs charges and immersed in both philosophical tomes and modern pulp thrillers, Langohr penned Roll Call. A vivid, clamorous account of the war on drugs. –Kirkus Discoveries, Nielsen Business Media, 770 Broadway, N.Y Yk For my book Underdog I went after John South from American Media to get- “In his latest novel, “Underdog,” Glenn Langohr takes B.J. back into the dreaded Supermax at Pelican Bay, California’s toughest prison. At first he’s just fighting to survive, hopelessly outnumbered by Mexican and black gang members, but then he goes back to try and help his friend, still inside, ferociously battling to change the penal system.

And ex-con Langohr can describe the hell of life inside better than any other writer. His vivid passages on just surviving in prison describe a nightmare we’d rather not know about.
He compares the plight of abandoned dogs, locked and horribly mistreated in rows of cages in animal shelters, to California prison inmates, locked and abused in the same cages.
Not a book for the faint of heart. We who sleep peacefully in our beds at night, unaware of the savagery going on behind prison walls, can only thankfully say: “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” Image

For Race Riot I went after TV Producer and author Phillip Doran to get,  ”A raw, breathless descent through the inner circle of the California Penal Hell. Fraught with detail that only someone who’s been there could know.”  I use all the social media sites and produce a lot videos and pictures. I document things like radio interviews or speaking at the University, to build credibility. I use prison art to represent the culture and flavor.

Can you tell us about your upcoming book?——– During my prison sentence, I really battled with giving my life completely to God, and surviving in prison through brute force and my own will power. I’m waiting for God to show me how to write it.
What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?—– I have gotten a few bad reviews from ex prison guards but I’ve also gotten some good reviews from law enforcement as well. I love getting great reviews from lawyers and Professors.

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers? Do it because you love it. Don’t do it for money, it’s a lot of work!

Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans? I would like to thank all my fans and readers for the reviews and feedback! A special shout out to my U.K. readers for making Race Riot number 1 in three categories for 3 months!
Glenn Langohr’s books are available in print, kindle and audio book and are on sale and Free for prime members. Meet the author

I discovered writing quite by accident and became a published author in 2010. My first book "When the Lotus Blooms," is a historical fiction novel about two child brides confronting their problems in 1930's Colonial India. It was inspired by my own family and is basically a snapshot of brahmin culture from a woman's perspective. It is available in print and as an ebook on most sites.

"Snapshots" a mini anthology of short stories based on my perspective of the history and culture from the countries I visited, will be released at the end of March as an ebook on the Kindle, free for those that have Amazon Prime. The collections includes stories from Peru, Egypt, India and Nazi Germany.

"The Present: A Gift from the Divine" is a book on Present moment awareness based on interviews I conducted over the last two years from people all over the world .It celebrates the spiritual practices and knowledge as taught by SriSri Ravi Shankar from the Art of Living foundation.
